Surface Studies is an ongoing series exploring closer views of the surfaces of photographs. The original subjects being obscured and distorted, now flattened by sheens of light. This work forces these images to contend with their own materiality, the true sources of their illumination, and the edges of their frames. In an exploration toward the origins of the photograph and its material fibers these images gesture toward the varied methods of reproduction. A grounding that breaks the transparent window and shows the hand of the craftsperson. An understanding that photographs are not that which they show, but rather are that which has been seen and nurtured.
